SOUTH SIOUX CITY | Alfred Albert Chartier, 95, of South Sioux City, passed away Saturday, April 1, 2017, at a local nursing facility, with loving family by his side.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Concordia Lutheran Church in Sioux City, with the Rev. Henry Witte officiating. Burial will be at a later date in Holstein Cemetery, Holstein, Iowa. Visitation with the family will be 9:30 a.m. until service time Saturday at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Mohr Funeral Home in South Sioux City.

Al was born on Dec. 15, 1921, to Walter and Beulah (Begnoche) Chartier, in Clyde, Kansas. They moved to the Sioux City area when he was young. He attended Central High School in Sioux City. Al had a spirit of adventure as a young man, racing motorcycles, flying airplanes and boxing. He was a Golden Gloves boxer, taking the Mid South Championship in the light heavy weight bracket. As a teenager, he enjoyed working the wheat fields in Kansas and spending time with all his relatives there.

He married Elvera Lois Marquardt on Aug. 21, 1942 and entered the U.S. Navy, serving during World War II. He was an aviation machinist mate first class. He served two years at Curtis Wright Factory in Columbus, Ohio. He was transferred to Wold Chamberline Field in Minneapolis, where he studied aircraft engines and hydraulics. He worked on CASV-B-2, PB4Y's and F4U Corsair's serving out of Alameda, Calif. until he was discharged at wars end. Al worked on the Chicago-Northwestern Railroad, retiring as an engineer after 37 years of service.

He was a member of Concordia Lutheran Church in Sioux City and the Elk Point (S.D.) American Legion. He was an avid hunter and fisherman throughout his life. In later years, he and Lois enjoyed traveling in their motor home, square dancing, golfing, bowling and fishing.

Those left to cherish their memories of Al include his wife of 74 years, Lois; three children, Fred Chartier and wife, Susan of Sioux City, Claudia Hanner and special friend, Richard Danielson of Lawton, Iowa, and John Chartier of Sioux City; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one brother, Harold Chartier of Sioux City; one brother-in-law, Lawrence Marquardt and wife, Alice of Gaza, Iowa; and numerous nieces nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

Al was preceded in death by his parents, Walter Chartier and Beulah Begnoche Parmelee; son, Gale A. Chartier; great-granddaughter, Isabelle Nangreave; sisters, Stella Chartier Girard (Emil), and Wilma Douglas Gereau (Gerald); brother, Elmer Chartier (Dollie Stout); and sisters-in-law, Evelyn Girard Chartier, Lois Riehle Chartier and Viola Ruth Marquardt.
