SIOUX CITY | Dorothea L. (McMaster) Bertrand Eickholt, 84, of Sioux City, died Friday, Feb. 24, 2017, at a Sioux City hospital.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, March 2, at St. Michael Catholic Church in Sioux City, with Father David Hemann officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, with a vigil service at 6 p.m., and a rosary by Catholic Daughters of the Americas at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Dorothea, daughter of Albion Paris and Ferne (Kendall) McMaster, was born Nov. 30, 1932, in Le Mars, Iowa. At a young age, Dorothea's family moved to Sioux City. She attended school in Sioux City and graduated from Central High School. In later years, she attended Briar Cliff College, where she received her Bachelor of Science degree in education, and did her graduate studies at the University of South Carolina and Converse College in South Carolina in the field of counseling, guidance, family systems and working with high-risk youth in group and individual counseling. She was on the National Dean's List in 1982 and 1983.

On Aug. 9, 1952, Dorothea was united in marriage to Willard G. Bertrand at Cathedral of the Epiphany in Sioux City. Dorothea and Willard made their home in Sioux City, and she worked for various food companies. From 1971 to 1980, she was employed at Heelan High School as Dean of Women. After moving to South Carolina, she worked for the University of South Carolina as a Child Development Program Administrator for junior and senior high youth, and was Adolescent Counselor for South Carolina Drug and Alcohol Commission.

Dorothea's community activities included Chairperson of the Advisory Board in Community Services, Vice Chair of State of South Carolina's Infant Mortality Task Force, Vice Chair South Carolina League of Women Voters, Department of Social Services Board for Multi Agency Advisory Team in Cherokee County, S.C., Director of Youth Organization at St. Paul Catholic Church in Spartanburg, S.C., and Captain of Volunteer Services and fund raising drives.

Dorothea enjoyed singing and was active in several choirs, playing bridge, Bunko and golfing. She was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church, Catholic Daughters of the Americas and Four Seasons Health Club. In addition, she was listed in the Who's Who Community Service and Who's Who Professional Women, Pace Setter for National Youth Re-Employment training award and JJPH Award.

On Labor Day 1998, Dorothea married Donald Eickholt.

She is survived by one son, Willard Bertrand Jr. and wife, Anita Bunkers; one daughter, Sheryl Bertrand-Fleming and husband, Dan; grandchildren, Ayrha Ellis and husband, Mark, Heather Appleton and husband, Kevin, Creighton Bertrand and wife, Fernanda, Paris Bunkers, Talia Silva-Santisteban and husband, Renzo, Kelson Bertrand, BrieEnna Bunkers, Joshua Fleming and Kathryn Williams and husband, Jason; great-grandchildren, Kobe, Trevin, Halisa, Breeson, Cielle, Kylah and Jaxton; siblings, Mary Kleyweg, Joanne Johnson and husband, Ken and Albion Paris McMaster Jr.; sister-in-law, Dorothy McMaster; and brother-in-law, Cliff Snedeker.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Willard Bertrand Sr. and Donald Eickholt; a daughter in infancy, Debra Lynn Bertrand; three brothers, William McMaster, Paul McMaster and wife, Mary, and Donald McMaster and wife, Norma; sister, Kathryn Snedeker; brother-in-law, Hank Kleyweg; and sister-in-law, Lucille McMaster.
