Martha Arlene Grohs 1922 - 2017

SIOUX CITY | Martha Arlene Grohs, 94, of Sioux City, passed away peacefully Monday, Feb. 13, 2017, at her home.

Services will be noon Friday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Kenny Hsu officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Homes.

Martha was born on Aug. 9, 1922, in Naper, Neb., to John and Sophie (Ulmer) Nicolaus. She graduated from high school and attended National Business Training School for one year.

On March 15, 1947, she married Wilbur A. Grohs in Naper. They made their home in Sioux City. Martha worked as a country school teacher in Nebraska and at D.K. Baxter Co.

She was a longtime member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, taught Sunday school for many years, and was a lamp lighter for 45 years, visiting area nursing homes, and bringing God's word to the residents. Martha enjoyed gardening, canning, sewing, quilting, and making sure her family was well cared for.

Those left to honor her memory include her three daughters, Patricia Wiseman of Homer, Neb., Susan (Craig) Barnes of Sioux City, and Janet Roepke of Sioux City; eight grandchildren, William (Vanessa) Wiseman, Elizabeth Heath (Bill Thatcher), Jesse Wiseman, Jennifer Barnes (Jeremy Funk), Jerrica Barnes, Jessica (Tony) Wilcox, Molly and Morgan Roepke; 11 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; brother, Harlan Nicolaus of Hawaii; two sisters-in-law, Bernice Johnsen and Mary Lewis; and many nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Wilbur; brothers, Edwin, Albert, and Herman; two sisters, Lila Grohs and Clara Green; and a granddaughter, Megan Roepke.
