SPENCER, Iowa | Charles E. Scheil, 85, of Spencer, passed away Wednesday, March 8, 2017, at Spencer Hospital.

Services will be 1:30 p.m. today at Hope Reformed Church in Spencer, with the Rev. Russell Muilenberg officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the American Legion Glen Pedersen Post 1 and V.F.W. Clay County Post 3159 of Spencer. Charles Edward Scheil was born on June 3, 1931, in Sioux City, to Max and Bethel (Meyer) Scheil. His childhood years were spent in the Sioux City area, where he attended school, graduating from Central High School in Sioux City in 1949. He enlisted in the Air National Guard in 1949. During the Korean War, he served as a military policeman in Bangor, Maine, until his honorable discharge in 1952.

Charles married Lois Holley on Feb. 9, 1951, in Sioux City. He worked for Western Electric in Sioux City and then Northwestern Bell in Sioux City and Spencer. He then worked for AT&T in St. Louis, Mo., until his retirement in 1988 when he moved to Okoboji, Iowa.

Charles enjoyed reading, golfing, being at the lake and boating. He was known for teasing and his wit. He was a member of the Kiwanis for 30 years and served as their lieutenant overnor from 1977 to 1978.

Left to cherish his memory are his four children, Randall (Cynthia) Scheil of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Robyn (Mark) Larsen of Spencer, Richard (Terri) Scheil of El Segundo, Calif., and Russell of Aurora, Ill.; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren, with one on the way; other relatives; and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Lois; and one sister, Betty Gruhn.
