Helen C. Rhubottom, 87, of St. Peter's, Mo., formerly of Sioux City, died Saturday, Feb. 18, 2006, at Barne's Jewish Hospital in St. Peter's.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Cathedral of the Epiphany in Sioux City, with the Very Rev. Paul-Louis Arts officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a parish vigil service at 7 p.m., at Christy-Smith Larkin Northside Chapel.

Helen was born May 30, 1918, in Sioux City, the daughter of George C. and Alice H. (Burke) Gunderson. She was raised in Sioux City and graduated from Central High School.

She married Wilbur F. "Bill" Rhubottom on Oct. 22, 1937, in Elk Point, S.D. He died June 11, 2003, in St. Peter's, Mo.

She had lived in Sioux City for many years before moving to Sergeant Bluff. She lived there until 2000, when the couple moved to St. Peter's. She was employed as a nursing assistant at St. Joseph Hospital and Marian Health Center for many years. She later worked in the business office at the Wilco Department Store.

She was a former member of the Cathedral of the Epiphany Catholic Church in Sioux City and St. Joseph Catholic Church in Salix, Iowa. She was a member of the Women of the Moose Lodge, the Sioux City Senior Center and the Girls of '68. She also belonged to a group that performed at local nursing homes. She enjoyed traveling to a different location each year for a family reunion, spending time with her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed watching her daily game shows, the Atlanta Braves baseball and rodeo bull riding.

Survivors include eight children, Ray Rhubottom and his wife, Marva of Oceanside, Calif., Jim Rhubottom and his wife, Donna of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Geraldine and her husband, Howard Simmons of St. Peter's, Mo., Sharon Bruggeman of Sioux City, Coramarie O'Leary of Central City, Iowa, Theresa and her husband, Gerald McPeek of St. Peter's, Mo., Mary Alewel of St. Charles, Mo., and Julie and her husband, Robert Underwood of Gardner, Kan.; 33 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill; a son, Billie; her parents; her stepfather, Oscar Burg; a brother, George Gunderson Jr.; and a sister, Berniece Verschoor.

Pallbearers will be her grandsons, Scott Lofgren, Jim Frankele, Jason Rhubottom, Jeff O'Leary, Scott Rhubottom, Lee McPeek, Evan Pfifer and Russel Lofgren.

Memorials in her name may be directed to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
