Michael Allen "Mike" Hanson, 53, of Sioux City died Monday, Feb. 20, 2006, at his residence.

Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Morningside Church of Christ, with the Rev. David B. Haynes officiating. Following the service Friday, the body will be cremated. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at Christy-Smith Larkin Morningside Chapel, 4101 Orleans Ave.

Mike was born July 2, 1952, in Plainview, Neb., the son of Robert F. and Susan M. (Hoberg) Hanson. As a young child, he moved with his family to Sioux City. He attended school at West Junior High School. He was an outstanding football player at Central and graduated from Central High School in 1971. He continued his education at Morningside College, where he was a member of Delta Sigma Phi. During his college years, he entered the U.S. Army and served in Korea during the Vietnam Conflict.

He married Chang Shik Choi in 1974. Together, they had a son, Adam Michael Hanson. He later married Carol Steinhauer Waldman on May 22, 1988.

He worked for a time at the Sioux City Stockyards. The last 19 years, he worked at John Morrell and Co. Inc. until the time of his death.

He was an avid fisherman, who enjoyed fishing with his friends, Ross, Billy, Huff and Corky. He was a sports enthusiast. He played fast pitch softball in Sioux City over the years and played baseball for a traveling military team while stationed in Korea.

Survivors include his wife, Carol Hanson of Sioux City; a son, Adam Michael Hanson of Sioux City; two stepsons and their wives, Brent and Angela Waldman of Sioux City and Brian and Dawn Waldman of Sioux City; his parents, Bob and Susan Hanson; three stepgrandchildren, Josh Waldman of North Dakota, Ian Waldman of Sioux City and Jaden Waldman of Sioux City; two sisters and their husbands, Robbi and Mike Codina of Dakota Dunes, S.D., and Debbie and Jim Lane of Sioux City; and nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the family.
