Robert Gudmestad, 72, of Gainesville, Ga., formerly of Sioux City, passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday, July 27, 2005.

Services will be 4 p.m. Sunday at Lake Whitewood Luthern Church in Arlington, S.D.

He was born Dec. 26, 1932, on the family farm near Lake Preston, S.D. After spending his early years going to school and working the farm, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force at age 20 where he proudly served his country for eight years.

On Jan. 20, 1962, he married Bobbie Wilhelm. They were married for 27 years. Together they lovingly raised three children.

Robert began his restaurant management career with Smith Industries located in Sioux City. He managed several Truck Haven Cafes for the company throughout the Midwest. His most memorable time was spent at the cafe in Jefferson, Iowa, where he worked with his kids. After many years serving as a manager, he became the human resource director at the corporate office until 1997. Although officially retired then, he continued working as a manager for the Pretzel Maker in Sioux City.

In 2001, Robert moved to Gainesville. He once again found his love for the outdoors. He became an active member of the Gainesville Seventh-day Adventist Church serving as a deacon. Still a working man at heart, he filled his days employed part-time at Biddies Laundromat.

In his leisure time he enjoyed grooming his yard, walking and studying the Bible. If you asked him, though, he would say his favorite pastime was spending time with his grandchildren.

Loved ones left to live their lives with the values he instilled are his two sons and a daughter, Kerry of Sioux Falls, S.D., Kevin and his wife, Judy, of Gainesville, and Kristel and her husband, Mike Vega, of Austin, Texas; and three grandchildren, Kelsi and Jonas Gudmestad and Logan Vega.

He will also be dearly missed by Bobbie Gudmestad-Maher of Pauldin, Ariz., his brother, Lyle Gudmestad of Clearwater, Fla.; a sister-in-law, Corrine Sheldahl, of Lincoln, Neb., widow of Glen Gudmestad; three nieces, two nephews and their families along with many other family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Kristian and Hilda Gudmestad and a brother, Glen Gudmestad.
