Elizabeth M. "Betty" Hallowell, 83, of Sioux City died Friday, Sept. 2, 2005, at a local nursing home.

Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Trinity Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Marvin Mueller officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, with the family present 6:30 to 8 p.m., at Christy-Smith Morningside Chapel.

Mrs. Hallowell was born Jan. 28, 1922, in Sioux City, the daughter of Dirk and Ida (Meibauer) Sas. She graduated from East High School in January 1940, where she was a member of the National Honor Society. She continued her education at the University of Iowa, Midland College, Morningside College and the University of Nebraska. She received a bachelor of science degree in 1967 from Morningside College and was a member of the I.S.E.A., N.S.E.A. and N.E.A. She had taught in upper elementary schools and was a librarian in the Iowa and Nebraska school systems.

She married Samuel C. Hallowell on May 3, 1946, in Sioux City. The couple farmed north and west of Hornick, Iowa, for several years. The family was active in church, school, 4-H, local and community affairs and were members of Hindman-Steel American Legion Post and Auxiliary 492.

Betty had been active in the Nebraska Senior Citizens Nutrition Site, Riverside Nutrition Site, Fairmount Park Nutrition Site, Siouxland Senior Center, Mary Treglia Golden Agers, Siouxland Informational Group for the Blind, R.S.V.P., Senior Companions, Care Caller and Prime Time Caller programs. She enjoyed helping people and volunteered for the American Cancer Society, Red Cross, Job Service of Iowa, Salvation Army, Goodwill Industries, A.I.D. Center, K.F.T.C. and local nursing homes. She was a city, county and district Senior Companion Speller and was an Iowa State Senior Companion Champion Speller, winning several awards at contests in Des Moines.

She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and was active in the life of the church, including Sunday school teacher, Vacation Bible School teacher, junior choir, Search, Grand Age, Grand Age Handbells, KVB Circle, WELCA and the prayer chain.

Survivors include three daughters, Ida Anderson and her husband, Don of Concord, Neb., Rebecca Noel and her husband, Louis of Burelson, Texas, and Merrilee Hallowell of Sioux City; two sons, Samuel Hallowell and his wife, Genise of Bronson, Iowa, and Dick Hallowell and his wife, Jeanene of Smithland, Iowa; 11 grandchildren, Donald Turner of Sioux City, Brian Anderson of Lincoln, Neb., Paul Hallowell and Keri Hallowell of Bronson, Sean, Erin and Caitlyn Hallowell of Smithland, Iowa, Janelle, Matthew, Daniel and Elissa Noel of Burelson, Texas; three great-grandchildren, Brandon, Anthony and Ethan Turner; and a great-step-grandchild, Eleanor Rhoades.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Clara DeMarest; a twin sister, Eleanor Hartman; and special friend, Steve Rogers.

A memorial contribution fund has been established in her name in care of the family.
