SIOUX CITY | William "Billy" Gerard Slate, 59, of Sioux City, died Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2017, at home.

Services will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel, with the Rev. Michael Erpelding officiating, and military honors provided by the U.S. Air Force. The family will greet friends starting at 1 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. The family requests attendees wear blue jeans in honor of Billy. William Gerard Slate was born Dec. 3, 1957, in Sioux City, the son of Arnold William and Mary Ann (Flynn) Slate. Billy was a lifelong Sioux City resident. He attended school at St. Boniface, Hoover Middle and West High schools. He later received his G.E.D.

On Sept. 9, 1978, Billy married Linda Marie Watts in Sioux City. They had two children, Adam and Virginia.

In 1976, Billy enlisted in the Air National Guard and this became his life career. On Dec. 12, 2012, he was honorably discharged from the 185th Air Refueling Wing in Sioux City, after attaining the rank of technical sergeant.

Billy enjoyed shooting pool, dart tournaments, camping, boating and his dog Heidi. Above all, he enjoyed his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Linda Slate of Sioux City; son, Adam Slate of Sioux City; daughter, Virginia (Timothy) Shuck of Sioux City; four grandchildren, Dallas, Hunter, Skylar and Seth Shuck, all of Sioux City; siblings, Dave (Teresa) Slate of Cambridge, Iowa, Dale (Karal) Slate of Sioux City, JoAnne (Eugene) Potter of Sioux City, Danny (Sandy) Slate of Mesa, Ariz., Jean Griffin of Owasso, Okla., Jane (Marvin) Whitlock of Waukee, Iowa, Mary Kay Miller of Sioux City, Laurie (Larry) Scofield of Sioux City and Teresa (Ron) Lemke of Sioux City; and nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Joseph Slate; and two brothers-in-law, Tom Griffin and Richard Miller.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family.
