Col. Robert E. Hamel, USAF (Ret.), 86, of Springfield, Va., formerly of Sioux City, passed away peacefully Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2007, at his residence following a brief illness.

Private graveside services will be in Arlington National Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Demaine Funeral Home in Springfield.

Robert E. Hamel was born Jan. 29, 1921, in Sioux City. He was raised in Morningside. He graduated from Morningside College, where he was a champion debater and extemporaneous speaker. He later received his master's degree from Auburn University and graduated from the Air War College. A regular officer in the U.S. Air Force, he served in various assignments in radar and satellite communications including his most memorable posting as a seconded officer to Headquarters Fighter Command, Royal Air Force, Stanmore, England. Among his many commendations was the Legion of Merit. He retired from the service in 1974 to care for his dear wife, Alice.

He lived life as he chose, was passionate in his opinions but was unceasingly generous and loving with his extended family.

He is survived and will be greatly missed by his children, Jeffrey and his wife, Debbie, Douglas and his wife, Janet, Elizabeth, John and his wife, Karen and Catherine and her dearest friend, Keith; and his grandchildren, Jason, Katherine, Emily, Benjamin, Robert and Alice.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Alice Clayton; and his wife, Sandy Coss Wells.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Capital Hospice, 6565 Arlington Blvd., Falls Church, VA. 22042 or the charity of one's choice.
