Vernon Joseph Castle, 89, of Bremerton, Wash., formerly of Sioux City, passed away Nov. 9, 2007 at his residence.

Services were held Nov. 15 at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Bremerton. Burial was in Miller-Woodlawn Cemetery.

Vernon was born June 16, 1918, in Sioux City, to Lloyd and Matilda (Raml) Castle (Castle Pharmacy in Morningside). He graduated from Trinity High School with the class of 1936. During the Depression years, he help his dad in the family pharmacy as did his siblings, John, Mary, Lloyd Paul and Rita. He attended Morningside College and graduated from the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy in 1943. He served as a lieutenant (JG) in the U.S. Navy during World War II aboard the LST 334 in the south Pacific.

While stationed in Seattle, he met Marian Esser of Remsen, Iowa, and they were married in Oct. 1946. He started as a pharmacist in Yakima, Wash., before owning Castle's Pharmacy in Bremerton for 45 years.

He is survived by his wife, Marian; five children, John (Cathy) Castle, Jim Castle, Joan (Frank) Dofelmeir, Margaret (Don) Miller and Claire (Wade) Walden; eight grandchildren; four great grandchildren; and his siblings, Mary of Sioux City, Lloyd Paul of California, and Rita (David) Goodrich of Perry, Iowa.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent in care of Mary Castle, 2020 Nebraska St., Sioux City, IA. 51104. Permanent Trinity Grad Memorials have been made and paid in full for Vernon and his brother, John, class of 1934.
