Helen E. Kane, 88, of Sioux City passed away Thursday, Nov. 29, 2007, at Indian Hills Care Center after a short illness.

Services will be 10 a.m. today at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with the Rev. Daniel C. Guenther, pastor officiating with Fred Karpuk, deacon, and nephews of the deceased being the homilist. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Christy-Smith Morningside Chapel.

The former Helen Elizabeth Karpuk was born Aug. 29, 1919, in Sioux City, the daughter of Paul and Elizabeth (Bernick) Karpuk. She graduated from East High School in 1938.

She married William Kane in May of 1942 in Sioux City. She was a lifelong resident of Sioux City and was employed in central supply as a supervisor at St. Luke's Hospital. She retired in the mid-1980s.

She was a former member of St. Casimir Church, a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and attended Nativity Church. She was a member and volunteer for Siouxland Senior Citizen Center. Helen enjoyed gardening, sewing and singing and used to sing in the St. Casimir Church choir. Most of all she loved spending time with family and friends.

Survivors include two daughters, Geraldine L. Turner and her husband, Gale of Orangeville, Ill., and Kathleen P. Sunderlage of Gillett, Wis.; a son, Michael W. Kane and his wife, Lynda of Sergeant Bluff; a brother, Joseph P. Karpuk and his wife, Mary Ann of Sioux City; a sister, Ann E. Peters of Sioux City; a sister-in-law, Mickey Karpuk of Oklahoma; grandchildren, Stuart (Lara) Turner of Queensbury, N.Y., Lizabeth (Jeffrey) Plaskon of Peoria, Ill., Leslie (Chad) Schmidt of Orangeville, Ill., Jeremy (Robyn) Sunderlage of Gillett and Raymond (Anna) Sunderlage, all of Gillett, Wis.; a stepgrandson, Troy (Kathy) Hummel; great-grandchildren, Alyssa and Austin Turner, Alexandra Schmidt and Eleanor Sunderlage; as well as many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Edward and Stanley Karpuk; and a sister-in-law, Ilene Karpuk.

Pallbearers will be Gale Turner, Mike Oliver, James Simeon, Troy Hummel, Lawrence McDermott, Chad Schmidt and Raymond Sunderlage. Honorary pallbearer will be Joseph Karpuk.

A memorial will be established in Helen's name at a later date.
