SLOAN, Iowa -- Frederick R. "Rick" Horne III of Sloan passed away Monday, Dec. 3, 2007, at his residence.

Memorial services will be 1 p.m. today at Community of Christ, 3232 Transit Ave., in Sioux City. Graveside services will be 1 p.m. Friday in Mound Grove Cemetery, Independence, Mo. Visitation with the family will follow the service today at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Waterbury Funeral Service in Sergeant Bluff.

Rick was born Feb. 4, 1951, in Kansas City, Mo. He was raised on his family's ranch north of Atkinson, Neb. He graduated from middle school District 22, a one-room schoolhouse he was proud to have attended. His class was the first to graduate from the new West Holt Atkinson High School building in 1969. Of his greatest memories were times spent with his grandmothers, during middle school in Independence, Mo., with Alberta Horne as he received medical care and in high school when he roomed weekends with Della Peterson in Atkinson.

He continued his education at Graceland University, where he received his bachelor of science double majoring in finance and business. It was also at Graceland where he met his wife, Susan Hartford of Somerville, N.J. They were married July 7, 1973, in Independence, Mo. A fine match for him, however for Sue, to the day exactly three years his junior, she always spent her birthday baking him a cake.

The couple spent three years living and working on the Horne ranch, remodeling their first home and caring for Sue's grandfather, George Hartford, before moving to Sloan. He went to work for Wayne and Margaret Smith at the Sloan State Bank. He retired from banking and continued farming with his family in the late 1980s. His fondness for computers also drew him to work for Gateway until he chose to retire for good in 1996.

A lifelong member of Community of Christ, he continued to counsel those around him until his death.

Survivors include his wife, Susan; his children, Carl and his fiancee, Andrea Fischer, Joel and Jennifer (Horne) Sieck; his grandchildren, Charlie and Abigail Sieck; his brother, Pete Horne Sr.; an uncle, Charlie Horne; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, F.R. and Helen Horne Jr.; and a younger brother, Charles "Charley" Horne.
