HINTON, Iowa | Thomas J. Rentel, 90, of Hinton, passed away Sunday, Jan. 1, 2017, at his residence following a brief illness.

Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Calvary Lutheran Church in Sioux City. The Rev. James Travis will officiate. Burial will be in Banner Township Cemetery, Lawton, Iowa. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Tom was born on Nov. 19, 1926, in Sioux City, the son of Frank and Lillian (Hunt) Rentel. He grew up in the Lawton area and graduated from Lawton High School. Tom served in the U. S. Army during World War II.

On Nov. 17, 1951, Tom married Caroline Udell at Calvary Lutheran Church. Tom worked for Gard Oil Company and Russell Miller Milling Company and then farmed in the Lawton area for 46 years. After his retirement, Tom and Caroline moved to Hinton.

Tom was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church.

Survivors include his wife, Caroline of Hinton; three children, Julie Cook, Kevin Rentel (Sue) and Rodney Rentel (Nancy), all of Sioux City; five grandchildren, Jason Gomez (Missy), Alison Lacska (John), Nick Rentel (Renee), Broc and Travis Rentel; nine great-grandchildren; and a brother, Roger Rentel (Judy) of Sioux City.

Tom was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Ruth and Dorothy; and an infant brother.
