Bubba was born on March 31, 1963, at Westover Air Force Base in Chicopee, Mass. He spent his childhood in northwest Iowa around Sheldon and Sioux Center. He moved to Sioux City, where he graduated from West High in 1983. He was an assistant manager of the West High football team and continued to volunteer after.

Bubba loved his local sports. He proudly supported the area schools, the Musketeers and the Bandits. He loved his Dallas Cowboys but could still be found cheering on the Vikings. He volunteered at Westside Little League, Salvation Army, ringing the bell at Christmas, packing food at the food bank, and making caramel apples for the Humane Society. Bubba received several awards for his dedication to volunteering and helping others, including the Presidential Volunteer Award for more than 20,000 hours of volunteering. He loved spending time with his family and many friends. He could be found many days at the Friendship House.
