Kathleen L. (Kaki) Brooks, 72, of Sioux City died Thursday, May 9, 2002, at her residence following a lengthy illness with cancer.

Services will be 1 p.m. today at Christy-Smith Morningside Chapel with the Rev. Martha Anderson officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Cemetery.

Mrs. Brooks was born Sept. 8, 1929, in rural Moville, Iowa, the daughter of Walter Louis and Mary Ethel (Bartels) Gernhart. She attended and graduated from East High School in 1947. In 1949 she graduated from Graceland College in Lamoni, Iowa, and in 1952 she graduated from Iowa State Teachers College.

She married John G. Brooks on Dec. 20, 1955, in Idaho Springs, Colo. She was a lifelong resident of Sioux City. She taught physical education in Le Mars and Bear Creek, Colo., from 1952 to 1956. From 1956 to the present, she was a substitute teacher for the Sioux City Community School System.

She was an avid roller skater and ice skater, a cansurvivor volunteer, enjoyed physical fitness (she was a longtime Four Seasons Health Club member), enjoyed gardening, cooking, music, portrait painting, watching her grandchildren participate in sports and other activities. She was devoted to her husband and her family.

Survivors include her husband; a son and his wife, Dan and Sheila Brooks of Sioux City; a sister and her husband, Lorraine and Tom Brooks of Sioux City; three grandchildren, Libby, Jack and Betsy Brooks, all of Sioux City; and a cousin, Avis Kohlhoff of Sioux City.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Ron Gernhart.
