Mae L. Carlson, 86, of Sioux City died Wednesday, May 15, 2002, at a Sioux City hospital.

An Eastern Star Service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, followed by a memorial service at Wesley United Methodist Church, 3700 Indian Hills Drive, with the Rev. David Morris officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. on Monday at the church, with the family present. Arrangement are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.

Mrs. Carlson was born October 17, 1915, in Sioux City, the daughter of Chet and Alice (Brown) Middleton. She graduated from Central High School in 1934, and then attended the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. She married Harold O. Carlson on September 16, 1939, in Sioux City.

Mrs. Carlson was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church. She was an 18-year volunteer at St. Luke's Regional Medical Center and the Senior Center, and quite often went to the Shriners Crippled Children's Hospital in Minneapolis, Minn. She was a member of Shrine Auxiliary, Hathor Temple #538 Daughters of Nile, Azure Chapter of Order of the Eastern Star, where she was a 50-year member, Shrine Kanduettes, and Girls of 68', serving as their first president.

Mrs. Carlson loved to travel.

Survivors include a daughter, Beverly Cowan-Johnson and her husband, Allen Johnson, of Sioux City; two granddaughters, Teresa Cowan-Piersma and Lori Cowan; a grandson, Doug Cowan; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband; one son-in-law, Jerry Cowan; and a sister, Mary Jane Curtis.

Honorary Pallbearers will be Dick Carlson, Denny Carlson, Mike Carlson, Doug Carlson, Lee Adams, Glenn Curtis and Robert Curtis.

Memorials may be directed to Shriner Crippled Children's Hospital in Minneapolis, Minn.
