Newman J. Clausen, 78, of Sioux City died Thursday, May 16, 2002, at a Sioux City Hospital of cancer.

Services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., the Rev. Carol James, pastor of Trimble United Methodist Church, officiating.

Mr. Clausen was born February 7, 1924, in Danbury, Iowa, the son of George and Mary (Fitzpatrick) Clausen. He married Florence L. Newton on March 16, 1943, in Sioux City. She died June 2, 1999, in Sioux City. Mr. Clausen worked for the city of Sioux City for 43 years, retiring in 1994 as a superintendent. He served with the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II. He was of the Catholic faith.

Survivors include four daughters and their husbands, Karen and Steve Counterman of Sioux City, Ruth and Randy Betsworth of Waterloo, Iowa, Marilyn and Junior Sherer of South Sioux City, and Debra and Ed Sherer of Wayne, Neb.; two sisters, Dolores and husband Jack Carey of Sioux City and Marilyn and husband Bill Allen of Henderson, Nev.; eight grandchildren, Kim Counterman, Kelly Vihstadt, Kris Collette, Ryan Betsworth, Rene Betsworth, Tasha Walls, Derek Jensen and Dane Jensen; four step-grandchildren, Lori Cotte, Gina Parham, Jeff Sherer, and Scott Sherer; and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his brothers Burdette, George (Joe) and Don.

Pallbearers will be Ryan Betsworth, Derek Jensen, Dane Jensen, Mark Carey, Jim Collette, and Jim Vihstadt.
