SIOUX CITY | Vern A. Johnson, 90, of Sioux City died Tuesday, May 31, 2016, at his home.

Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Saturday in Laurel City Cemetery, Laurel, Neb., with the Rev. Tim Forget officiating. Military honors will be performed by the U.S. Army. There will be no visitation. Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel in Sioux City. Online condolences may be expressed at www.meyerbroschapels.com.

Vern, the son of Harry and Martha (Heitman) Johnson, was born on May 30, 1926, in Cedar County, Neb. He grew up on a farm in Cedar County. Vern served in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II and was stationed in the Pacific Theater. After his honorable discharge, he returned to Nebraska and attended Wayne State College to receive his teaching degree.

Vern was united in marriage to Veronica Duffy. Vern taught in Nebraska for a few years, then worked as a math teacher for Sioux City Community Schools for 25 years. He also owned a motel in South Sioux City.

Vern was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Sioux City. He enjoyed fishing and had owned a resort in Spicer, Minn.

Vern is survived by his wife, Veronica of Sioux City; one son, Michael Duffy of Sioux City; five grandsons, Nick, Robbie, Eric, Shane and Pat; five great-grandchildren; one brother, Milo Johnson and wife, Muriel of Laurel; and other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Mary Rupple; one grandson, Ryan; and one brother, Darrell Johnson.
