SERGEANT BLUFF | Leonard Johnson, 89, of Sergeant Bluff died Friday, Aug. 26, 2016, at a local care facility.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Community United Methodist Church in Sergeant Bluff. Burial will be in Woodbury Township Cemetery in Sergeant Bluff, with military honors conducted by the U.S. Army. Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Waterbury Funeral Service of Sergeant Bluff, 400 4th Street.

Leonard Johnson was born Nov. 4, 1926, in Morehead, Iowa, the son of John and Edith (Bukland) Johnson. Leonard grew up in Morehead, played basketball and graduated from Morehead High School in 1945. Leornard then joined the U.S. Army, and served as clerk typist for Gen. Eisenhower headquarters in Italy, receiving a honorable discharge in 1947.

Leonard married Elizabeth Mandicino in March of 1948. Together they made their home in Sergeant Bluff. They owned and operated the Derby gas stations in Sergeant Bluff. He also worked at the Sioux City brick yards, later working for Ag Processing, retiring in 1988. In 1989, his wife, Elizabeth passed away.

He was a lifetime member of the Legion in Sergeant Bluff, receiving a 60-year pin, and also served on the City Council. Leonard loved watching his grandchildren in athletic events, watching basketball, playing horseshoes, playing cards with family, traveling, and enjoyed watching the old western movies.

Leonard is survived by his two sons, Bruce (Vicki) Johnson of Spirit Lake, Iowa, Chris (Shelly) Johnson of Brentwood, Tenn.; two special nieces, Janet Clarey of Charles City, Iowa, and Kathy (Mike) Waderich of Hornick, Iowa; six grandchildren, Jamie, Neil, Nicolle, Bo, Mackenzie and Drew; four great-grandchildren; and one brother, Wayne Johnson of Sergeant Bluff,

He is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Elizabeth; one grandson, Jacob Johnson; one infant brother, Donald Johnson; three step siblings, Jean, Elvin and Leona Johnson; and special friend, Frances Marx.
