Man Killed In Runaway

Slips from Load of Hay Trying to Rein in Bolting Team

Falling from a hayrack when his team ran away, John Hanctkiewicz, 1123 South Linn Avenue, suffered fatal injuries. He died at St. Vincent’s hospital, his skull fractured.

Hanctkiewics was riding atop the load of hay. As he neared the intersection of South Linn and Vine Avenues, the horses became frightened and bolted.

The driver, in an effort to rein them in, slipped from the load. He fell on his head and was unconscious when Officer William Howes and Clarence Peterson arrived from police head-quarters.

Mr. Hanctkiewics was born in Poland 55 years ago. He came to the United States and Sioux City in 1907, and had worked at various occupations since that time. Of late, relatives said, he and a partner had been working a small truck garden and hauling hay on the side.

The accident victim is survived by a sister, Mrs. Plly Pirog, 1123 South Linn Street.

The body is at the Kidd undertaking parlor, pending completion of funeral arrangements.
