Death Claims Civil War Vet

Long Time Resident of Woodbury County Passes Away

Infirmities due to advanced age resulted in the death of John Holdcroft, 84-year-old civil war veteran, in his home at Sloan at noon Wednesday. He had been a resident of Woodbury County for more than a half century.

The elderly man was born September 18, 1847, in Athens County, Ohio. He came to Iowa in the early 70’s and soon after his arrival he and Miss Ruth E. White were married. Ten children were born to them, nine of whom survive Mr. Holdcroft. Mrs. Holdcroft died in 1926.

Mr. Holdcroft, a retired farmer, served as a drummer boy and a private in the Eighteenth volunteer infantry of Ohio in the conflict between the union and confederate forces and was a member of Gen. Sherman’s troops when they made their “march to the sea.”

Surviving the deceased man are; six sons, J. Holdcroft, Elijah W., Lender H., Arthur T., Arza E., and Hamilton F. Holdcroft, all of Sloan; three daughters, Mrs. Ketural Craig, Salix, Mrs. Ethel Brown of Bronson and Mrs. Augusta Kiddoo of Crookston, Minn., 35 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2 o’clock Monday afternoon in the Methodist Church at Sloan. Rev. J. B. Stevenson of Bronson will officiate. Burial will be in Graceland Park Cemetery here under the direction of the Whiting Funeral Home of Whiting.
