Olive J Miller Francis
20 June 1854 – 13 Jan 1929

Mother of 13 children and a pioneer resident of Woodbury County, Mrs. Joseph Francis, 75 years old died at her home, 5061 Orleans Avenue, Sunday following a three weeks illness with pneumonia. Mrs. Francis had been a resident of this county 74 years.

Born in Harrison County, Iowa June 20, 1854, Mrs. Francis at the age of 1 year, located with her parents in Woodbury County near Oto. She was married to Joseph Francis August 6, 1871 at Oto and resided there until 15 years ago, when she came to Sioux City.

On August 6, 1928, Mr. and Mrs. Francis celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary. Relatives from all over Iowa attended the celebration. Mrs. Francis was a member of the church of the Nazarene.

In addition of her widow, Joseph, Mrs. Francis is survived by eight sons, five daughters, six sisters, two brothers, 43 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

The surviving children are: George of Kettle Falls, Washington, Calvin, Stephen, Leonard and Hobart of Hornick, Iowa and Ira of Pierson, Iowa, Mrs. Alice Ringrose of Des Moines, Mrs. Victoria Gano of Sloan, Iowa, Mrs. Amy Arnold of Hornick, Iowa, Mrs. Ruth Bower and Mrs. Ollie Jackson of Smithland, Iowa.

The surviving sisters and brothers are: Mrs. Mary Dunham of Los Angeles, Cal., Mrs. Nellie Reynolds of Terry, Mont., Mrs. Martha Miller of Sloan, Iowa, Mrs. Will Foster of Getty’s, S.D., Mrs. Charles Thompson and Mrs. Perry Coon of Oto, Iowa, Nathan and John Miller also of Oto.

Three daughters preceded Mrs. Francis in death.

Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at 1:30 o’clock at the Church of the Nazarene, Rev. M. I. Jones officiating with interment in Graceland Park Cemetery.
