Marcellus Sawyer was born at Newman’s Grove, Nebraska, March 27, 1891 and died at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. T.J. Sawyer of Hornick, Iowa, January 3, 1919, aged 27 years, 9 months and 6 days.

There are left to mourn him, his father and mother, 4 brothers, John, Louis, Raynard and Rasmus, all residing here and two sisters, Mrs. Wm. Eichhorn of Lavinia, Iowa and Mrs. D.M. Cleveland of Sioux City, Iowa, one sister having preceded him in infancy.

Mr. and Mrs. Sawyer moved to Hornick during Marcellus early childhood days and he has grown to manhood here and his many friends testify to the love in which he was held. It is several years since his health began to fail, but he was always so brave and cheerful that few realized the seriousness of his condition. In November, Marcellus, with his brother Rasmus, went to Arizona and for a time he made rapid improvement, but contracted a severe cold and from that time his decline was rapid and his suffering intense. He reached home on Monday, Dec. 30th and passed into a better land four days later. Though our sorrow in his going away is great, we would not wish him back to suffer here, but will rest secure in the assurance that he has entered into Eternal life where there is no more pain or sorrow.

The funeral was held in the Methodist Church, Sunday morning, Jan. 5th and burial in the Graceland Cemetery, Morningside, Rev. Hutchinson officiating.

Mrs. Wm. Eichhorn of Lavinia, and Mrs. D.M. Cleveland of Sioux City, Iowa, sisters of the deceased; also a brother of Mr. Sawyer from Newman Grove, Nebraska and a sister of Mrs. Sawyer of Sioux City were out-of-town relatives in attendance to the funeral.
