Elizabeth E. "Liz" Calhoon, 54, of Sioux City died Tuesday, May 8, 2007, at her residence following a lengthy illness.

Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, with the Rev. Michael J. Erpelding officiating. Burial of the cremated remains will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation with the family present will be 6 to 8 p.m. today, with a parish vigil service at 7 p.m., at Christy-Smith Larkin Northside Chapel.

Liz was born Jan. 11, 1953, in Sioux City, the daughter of Wilbur S. and Harriet C. (Reilly) Calhoon. She was a lifelong Sioux City resident. She attended St. Joseph Grade School and Woodrow Wilson Junior High School. She later attended Western Iowa Tech Community College.

She was employed as a seamstress at Aalfs Manufacturing and worked as a meatpacker for IBP. She then worked as a nurse's aide for Casa de Paz Nursing Home and for the Horizon Nursing Home. She retired in 1987 because of poor health.

She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. She was a Girl Scout leader, a T-ball and softball coach and worked for Special Olympics. She enjoyed playing softball and was in a bowling league, where she served as a league treasurer. She rooted for the Iowa Hawkeyes, Notre Dame, the Chicago Cubs and the Chicago Bulls. She worked crafts and sold raffle tickets for many organizations.

Survivors include her daughter, Danielle J. "D.J." Calhoon of Sioux City; four sisters, Catherine M. Dennis of Bronson, Iowa, Caroline "Susie" Holmes and Jeff Jansen of Sioux City, Jean Marie "Jeannie" Calhoon of Sioux City and Cheryl A. "Annie" and her husband, Larry Mahacek of North Sioux City; a brother, Michael J. "Jim" Calhoon of Sioux City; six nieces and nephews; six grandnieces and grandnephews; and special friends, Rita Gerking, Karen Baker, the Rev. Richard A. Sitzmann and Kevin Engling.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Theresa E. Calhoon; and a niece, Tasha LeAnn Calhoon.

Honorary pallbearers will be Richard Gerking, Kevin Engling, Tom Henrichs, Willie Mahacek, Larry LaFleur, Kyle Koster and Jon Emmerick.
