Helen Margaret Sawin, 82, died Friday, January 29, 1999, at her home in Anthon, Iowa. Funeral services were held Tuesday, February 2, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Anthon, with Rev. David Hogan officiating. Interment was at Piero Cemetery, Grant Township, rural Anthon, under direction of Armstrong Funeral Service.

She was born December 14, 1916, in Anthon, Iowa, the daughter of Edmund and Martha (Bernard) Gothier. She grew up and was educated in the Anthon area, graduated and went on to teach school in Grant township. It was then that she met Willerd A. Sawin and they were married February 26, 1938, in Sioux City, Iowa. They lived on the family farm for 56 years and then moved into Anthon. Willerd died February 7, 1998.

She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Anthon.

Survivors include one son, Gary and his wife, Karen, of Oto, Iowa; four daughters, Mary Ellen and her husband, Ron Houghtaling and Kathleen Baltzell, all of Anthon, Gloria Sawin of Santa Fe, New Mexico; and Valerie and her husband Kim Preston of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; two sisters, Charlotte Miller of LeMars, Iowa, and Shirley Gothier of Los Angeles, California; two sisters-in-law, Barbara Gothier of Sioux City and Beth Gothier of Anaheim, California; ten grandchildren, five great grandchildren and other relatives, neighbors and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Eddie and Harold, one sister, Nita, one grandchild, one great grandchild and one son-in-law.
