Robert L. Jones, 73, of McCook Lake died Saturday, Feb. 16, 2002, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Larkin Northside Funeral Home. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. The body was cremated. There is no viewing.

Mr. Jones was born Nov. 20, 1928, in Sioux City, the son of Earl and Evelyn (Stewart) Jones. He was raised in Sioux City and attended Central High School. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1945 to 1947. He participated in Operation Crossroad, which was the testing of the nuclear bombs Able and Baker on Bikini Island. After the service he returned to Sioux City, where he married Jean M. Finley on Oct. 31, 1948. He worked as a brakemen, a switchman and later as a yardmaster for the Chicago-Northwestern Railroad. After he left the railroad, he worked as a maintenance supervisor for the United States Post Office until his retirement in 1992.

He was a member of Riverside Lutheran Church, the Brotherhood of Railroad Workers, and the United States Postal Workers Union. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans and Veterans of Foreign Wars.

In his younger days he enjoyed riding his motorcycle and he became an airplane pilot. He was an avid cribbage player. He enjoyed tinkering in his shed, having cookouts with his family and spending time with his cat, Charles Anderson.

Survivors include his wife; a son and his wife, Dennis and Robyn Jones of Alcester, S.D.; five daughters, Kathy and her husband, Larry Jensen of North Glenn, Colo., Vicky and her husband, Rodger Merryman of Sioux City, Judy and her husband, Mike Fox of Sioux City, Wendy Jones of Alcester, and Peggy and her husband, Mark Tramontina of Sioux City; a grandson whom they raised, Rob Jensen of McCook Lake; 14 grandchildren, Sacha Johnson, Joshua Trobaugh, Sarah Jones, Jesse Jones, Doug Brand, Tessa Hamersma, Jeremy Merryman, Tiffany Inlay, Michael Fox, Brandie Florey, Mindie Beavers, Rick Carlson, Christopher Carlson and Seth Snakenberg: nine great-grandchildren; and special friends, Gene and Rosie Framke of DeLand, Fla.

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son; a brother, Stewart Jones; and five grandchildren, Jennifer, Jana and Stephanie Fox, Joe Beavers and Megan Jones.

Pallbearers will be his grandsons.

There will be a reception following the services Tuesday at the North Sioux City Community Center.
