Dr. George G. Spellman Sr., 81, of Sioux City died Saturday, Feb. 16, 2002, at a Sioux City hospital after being stricken at his residence.

Services will be 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, with the Most Rev. Daniel DiNardo and the Most Rev. Lawrence D. Soens officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Sioux City. Visitation will be 3 to 8:30 p.m. today, with a rosary at 4 p.m. said by the Carmelite Guild Board and St. Therese Study Club, a parish vigil service at 7 p.m. followed by a Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus chalice service, all at the church. The Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus will stand an honor guard at the vigil service. Arrangements are under the direction of Larkin Northside Funeral Home.

Dr. Spellman was born Sept. 11, 1920, in Woodward, Iowa, the son of Martin Edward and Margaret Corinne (Geneser) Spellman. He attended St. Ambrose College, the University of Iowa and the University of Iowa Medical School. He served as a captain in the U.S. Army Medical Corps during World War II.

He married M. Caroline Dwight on Aug. 26, 1942, in Des Moines. He was in private practice from 1948 until he retired in 1991. He practiced in Mitchell, S.D., from 1948 until 1950. In 1950, he moved to Sioux City where he had his practice until his retirement.

He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church and was ordained a Deacon of the Catholic Church in 1989 by Bishop Lawrence D. Soens.

He also was a member of the American Medical Association, Iowa Medical Society, Woodbury Medical Society, Fellow of the American College of Physicians, American and Iowa Societies of Internal Medicine, American Heart Association, American Diabetes Association, American Thoracic Society and Medical Advisory Committee Kidney Foundation of Iowa. He served as a former president of the Woodbury Medical Society and as a former president of the staff of St. Vincent's Hospital and St. Joseph's Hospital. He was a member of the board of directors at St. Vincent's Hospital and Marian Health Center. He was chairman of the Mental Health Committee in Woodbury County and a member and vice president of the Iowa State Board of Medical Examiners. He was an associate professor of internal medicine in the Colleges of Medicine at Iowa State University and the University of South Dakota.

His honors and awards include Knight of St. Gregory the Great -- Papal Honor Catholic Church, Knight of Columbus -- Third and Fourth Degrees, National Association of Retarded Citizens Award, Siouxland Mental Health Certificate of Outstanding Service, Iowa Mental Health Authority and Continuing Education Committee Award, Community Service Award -- Alumnae of Briar Cliff College, Briar Cliff Medal, Internist of the Year -- Iowa Society of Internal Medicine, Laureate Award -- College of Physicians, Iowa Chapter and Distinguished Service Award -- Kidney Foundation of Iowa.

The George G. Spellman Dialysis Center was named in his honor by Marian Health Center. He received the Humanitarian Award from the River-Cade Admirals' Club and was named Who's Who in the World, Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the Midwest, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare and Who's Who in Science and Engineering. He received the Alumni Award from St. Ambrose College. He also received the 2001 Leadership in Catholic Education Award.

His survivors include his wife, Mary Caroline Dwight Spellman; two sons and their wives, George G. Spellman Jr., M.D,. and Ellen of San Diego, Calif., and John Pile-Spellman, M.D., and Eliza, M.D., of Pelham Manor, N.Y.; four daughters, Carolyn and her husband, Harold Rambow of Walworth, Wis., Mary Alice Spellman of Lawrence, Kan., Elizabeth and her husband, James Chrisinger of Ames, Iowa, and Loretta and her husband, Joseph Hoffman Jr. of Columbus, Ohio; 15 grandchildren, John, Beth and Mark Rambow, Christopher and his wife, Michelle Spellman, Matthew Spellman, Angela and Stuart Gross, John and Georgia Chrisinger, Megan, Katherine and Julian Pile-Spellman and Paul, Joanna and Laura Hoffman; a great-grandson, Connor Spellman; two brothers, James L. Spellman of Des Moines, and Gerald T. Spellman of Granger, Iowa; and a sister, Mrs. Phil (Anne) Poland of Carroll, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Edward M. Spellman of Woodward, Iowa, J. Clemens Spellman of Woodward, and Francis J. Spellman of Des Moines; and a sister, Mrs. Robert (Mary) Halbur of Carroll.

Pallbearers will be his grandsons, John and Mark Rambow, Christopher and Matthew Spellman, Stuart Gross, John Chrisinger, Julian Pile-Spellman and Paul Hoffman.

A memorial has been established in his name for the Carmelite Monastery of Sioux City.
