Dolores Faith (Helma) McMillan was born on April 23, 1931, to Charles and Elizabeth Helma, in Mitchell, S.D. She grew up in rural Kimball, S.D., and graduated from high school in 1949. She continued her education at Southern State Teachers College in Springfield S.D. where she met her husband, Donald McMillan.

They were married on Aug. 19, 1952. Dolores taught at the Balster Country School near Kimball, while Don was in the service. They moved to Springfield, S.D., in 1955, where Don finished his education and began teaching at the college. While their three children were growing up, Dolores was a busy mom and served for many years as a 4-H club leader. She was a teacher's aide at the elementary school in Springfield from 1974 to 1981. In 1984, they moved to Marshall, Minn., where Donald taught at SWMS for 10 years. Don and Dolores moved to Sioux City in November 2015 to be closer to their daughter.

Dolores volunteered for the Avera Hospital Auxiliary and Retired and Senior Volunteer programs in Marshall. She sewed many quilts for the Senior Center to sell. She was very talented at crocheting and sewing. She loved playing cards, crafts, collecting stamps, dolls, bears, gardening, and spending time with family. She and Donald ran D & D crafts for many years, selling their crafts at local shows. She was a longtime member of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 132 in Springfield.

Survivors include her husband of 63 years, Donald of Sioux City; one son, George McMillan of Lincoln, Neb.; daughter, Nancy (Kirk) Flammang, of Lawton, Iowa; daughter, Mary (Ed) Gettinger, of Ray, Minn.; grandchildren, Lisa (Kyan) Heck of Chanhassen, Minn., Laura (Matthew) Benson, of Lawton, Jennifer (Adam) Weaver of Walcott, Iowa, Donny Gettinger of Louis Park, Minn., and Katie Gettinger of St. Louis, Mo.; and great-grandchildren, Braden and Kyli Heck, and Wesley and Lilly Benson.
