HINTON, Iowa | Bedford E. Newberg, 96, of Hinton passed into the loving arms of God after a full life on Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2014, at Plymouth Manor Care Center in Le Mars, Iowa.

Masonic services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Hinton United Methodist Church, followed by the funeral service with the Rev. Kolleen Queener officiating. Bedford was born on July 10, 1918, in Lawton, Iowa, the son of Gus and Edith (Law) Newberg. The family moved to a farm near Hinton, where Bedford graduated from Hinton High School in 1936.

Bedford and Lois Kovarna were united in marriage on Sept. 30, 1941, in Sioux City. Bedford and Lois farmed near Hinton.

He was the most loving, genuine person with the best smile and heart. He loved his wife and children above and beyond anything else. He had a great respect for the land that he had the opportunity to farm. Bedford would walk a mile to rid a sunflower from his field. His quick wit and humor will be sorely missed. He loved to repeat his life’s stories.

Bedford was a member of Merrill Melbourne United Methodist Church and had served as a trustee. He was also a member of the Abu Bekr Shrine, 50-year member of the Scottish Rite Consistory, and Triangle Lodge 640 since 1940. He belonged to the Shrine Wrecking Crew and Hospital Dad's. He was also a Farm Bureau member and past president of the Plymouth County Trustees. In 1963, he was vice-chairman of the Plymouth County ASC committee.

Surviving to cherish his memories is his dear wife Lois of 73 years; a daughter Sharleen "Shar" K. Petersen of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; three sons, Dennis B. Newberg and his wife, LaDonna of Merrill, Iowa, Darrel Newberg of Merrill, and Donald Newberg of Hinton; nine grandchildren, Pamela K. (Joe) Bays of Smithville, Mo., Denise R. (Andy) Mitchell of Cedar Rapids, Dr. Bradley D. (Stacey) Petersen of Cedar Rapids, Nicole (Dr. Todd) Goodwin of Kingsley, Iowa, Brian D. (Jennifer) Newberg of Dakota Dunes, S.D., Tami (Sean) Blackmore of Battle Creek, Iowa, Corey Newberg of Merrill, Brett (Shannon) Newberg of Broomfield, Colo., and Laura (Dan) Hoffman of San Antonio, Texas; 15 great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Gus and Edith (Law) Newberg; a sister, Loretta Epling; a brother, Virgil Newberg; and a son-in-law, Stan Petersen.

Memorials can be made in Bedford's name to Merrill Melbourne United Methodist Church Endowment Fund or the Abu Bekr Shrine Transportation Fund
