SIOUX CITY | George Walter McGarry Jr., 48, of Sioux City passed away Saturday, Oct. 11, 2014, at his residence surrounded by his loving family and under the care of Hospice.

Memorial services will be 7 p.m. today at Mayflower Congregational United Church of Christ in Sioux City, with the Rev. Dan Lozer and Chaplin Lorna Peters officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Waterbury Funeral Service of Sioux City.

George was born in Sioux City on June 28, 1966, the son of George and Betty (Strand) McGarry. He grew up in the Lawton area and attended Lawton-Bronson Community Schools, where he graduated with the class of 1984. Following his graduation, he attended St. John Seminary in Missouri. He then moved to Texas where he was employed in the health care field. In 1995, he returned to Sioux City and continued to work in health care until his illness would no longer allow him to work.

George was an accomplished musician. He played several different instruments and served as an organist at several different churches in the area. He also loved traveling, genealogy research, and spending time with his family. He was currently serving on the board of directors of the Siouxland Community Health Center. He previously served on the International AIDS Global Health Initiative and was a past director of the Siouxland and Local Area AIDS project.

His life will always be cherished and remembered by his family which includes his mother, Betty McGarry Rhodman of Sioux City; his lifelong partner, Brandon Frasch of Sioux City; brothers, Mark McGarry of Sioux City, Mike Rhodman and wife, Tami of Sioux City, and Leland Rhodman and his wife, Tammy of Sioux City; sisters, Cindy McGarry of Sioux Falls, S.D., Mary Kahler of Bartlett, Tenn., Becky Moore and her husband, Sam of Weston, W.Va., and Theresa Holst and her husband, Mike of Lawton; nine nephews; five nieces; and numerous grandnephews, and nieces, aunts, uncles, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his father George McGarry Sr; and his stepfather, Walter Rhodman.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Siouxland and the Siouxland Community Health Center HIV Team.
