22 April 2014SIOUX CITY | Earl R. Kimbell, 91, of Sioux City died Sunday, April 20, 2014, at Emeritus Senior Living at NorthPark Senior Living following a brief illness.
Services will be noon Wednesday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel, with the Rev. Scott Squires officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 7 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home. Condolences may be sent online at www.meyerbroschapels.com.
Earl was born on Oct. 27, 1922, in Wakefield, Neb., the son of Francis J. and Gertrude (Fitzsimons) Kimbell. He grew up in Allen, Neb., where he graduated from high school. He attended junior college in Pasadena, Calif., and General Motors Training School in Omaha.
On March 13, 1942, he married Norma J. Carr in Allen, Neb. They raised four children. He served with the U.S. Army from 1944 until his honorable discharge in 1946.
Earl owned and operated Earl’s Texaco Station until 1969. He worked for the city of Sioux City as a mechanic foreman, then for Saunders Leasing as a diesel mechanic until it closed. He was the service manager for Charlie Zook Dodge before joining Western Iowa Technical Community College. Earl was an auto mechanic instructor and department head of the Auto Department at WITCC. He retired in August 1987.
Earl’s memberships and past offices included past president of the Sioux City Evening Lion’s Club, service officer for American Legion Monahan Post 64 and secretary/treasurer for SCORE. He was a member at Crescent Park United Methodist Church, where he served as an usher and a trustee. In earlier years, Earl enjoyed fishing, hunting and golf.
Survivors include his wife of 72 years, Norma; four children, Christine Clark of Sioux City, Linda Kimbell and her husband, Tony Cortina of Raleigh, N.C., Steve Kimbell and his wife, Terri of Sioux City, and Susan Minehart and her husband, Colin of Albert Lea, Minn.; a brother, Dale Kimbell and his wife, Daphne of Alamo, Calif.; two sisters, Velma Luhr of Sioux City, and Alice Holcomb of Riverside, Calif.; 12 grandchildren, Jerry Clark, Cyndy Clark, Sarah Cortina, Ryan (Amy) Kimbell, Kristi (Jamie) Wilshire, Laura Kimbell, Craig (Erin) Kimbell, Mary Kimbell, David Kimbell, Joe Kimbell, Mike Minehart, and Melissa Minehart; 14 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be his grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in his name to Crescent Park United Methodist Church.
