Sioux City Journal
4 April 2007

Charles Byron "Chuck" Day, 61, of Sioux City passed away unexpectedly Sunday, April 1, 2007, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Redeemer Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Russell Senstad officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 3 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 6:30 p.m., at Christy-Smith Morningside Chapel.

Chuck was born Sept. 1, 1945, in Evanston, Ill., the son of Merritt Meers and Mildred Anna Sophia (Garpow) Day. He attended school in Evanston and Wadsworth, Ill., graduating in 1963. He grew up in Evanston and Wadsworth and came to Sioux City in 1965 with the U.S. Air Force.

He met and married his wife, Judy Meier at Redeemer Lutheran Church on July 1, 1967. They then moved to England, where he continued his service in the U.S. Air Force. Following his service duty, they returned to Waukegan, Ill., where he was a firefighter until 1979, when they returned to Sioux City to purchase his wife's family business, Meier Towing.

He will be remembered for being a loving husband, father and grandfather. His sense of humor could bring a smile to anyone's face. He loved Meier Towing and was dedicated to preserving the tradition of the business. From answering phones at all hours to working in any condition, he never sent his employees out on a job he wasn't willing or able to do himself.

He was an avid Explorer's fan and loved bowling, fishing, growing giant pumpkins and gardening. He was a huge fan of the Chicago White Sox and the Green Bay Packers and he liked to restore Model A cars. But most of all, he loved spending time with his family, friends and grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Judy of Sioux City; a daughter, Shelly and Kyle Lewis of Sergeant Bluff; a son, Jeff and DeLynn Day of Sioux City; four grandchildren, Anna and Joshua Lewis and Thomas and Leah Day; his father and mother-in-law, Clarence and Lena Meier; nephews, Charles E. "Butch" and Bev Day of Wisconsin, Merritt "Bobby" and Mona Day of Iowa, Allen R. "Dicky" and Mickey Day of Wisconsin, and Patrick "Paddy" Day of Wisconsin; and a niece, Raynelle Russell of Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Jacob Lewis; two brothers, Merritt "Bob" Day and Allen R. "Pat" Day; and a sister, Elaine Holmes.
