CORRECTIONVILLE, Iowa | Sally C. Deeds, 55, of Correctionville passed away Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2013, at her residence following a valiant struggle with cancer.

Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at the St. John Lutheran Church in Cushing, Iowa, with the Rev. Beverly Wolff officiating. Burial will be in Correctionville Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Nicklas D. Jensen Funeral Home in Correctionville. Sally was born on Feb. 18, 1958, in Sioux Falls, S.D., the fourth child of the late Rev. Ervin B. and Maude (Franzen) Schemmel. She was baptized at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Canova, S.D. She is a graduate of Eastwood High School in Correctionville, now known as River Valley High School. In 2012, she earned a degree as a medical coding specialist from Western Iowa Technical Community College in Sioux City.

Sally was the devoted wife of Randy E. Deeds, the mother of six children and 21 grandchildren. She and Randy were married on Aug. 28, 1976. She was owner and manager of M&M Copy Quick in Sioux City for 15 years.

Sally was the organist at St. John Lutheran Church in Cushing, where she was a member. She was a leader in the congregation, serving on the church council and teaching Sunday School, Vacation Bible School and production of the children’s Christmas programs were her special delight. She also played the organ at Grace Lutheran Church in Correctionville, during her years of membership there.

She enjoyed scrap booking, gardening, genealogy and being surrounded by her family. Sally served on the Eastwood/River Valley School Board from 1991 to 2002, during which two new schools were built and the merger of schools into River Valley was completed. She was active on the Correctionville Horizons Committee that sought state funding for areas of need in the community.

Sally is survived by husband, Randy; children, Travis (Nicole) Deeds of Holstein, Iowa, Taffy (Jeffrey) Zoelle of Sioux City, Tobias (Brigette) Deeds of Washta, Iowa, John Deeds of Correctionville, Joshua Deeds (Rachel Harris) of Correctionville, and Samantha Deeds of Moville, Iowa; grandchildren, Calvin, Isabella, Monica, and Cash Deeds, Sunshine, Grace, Anthony, Hector, Michael, and Carter Benson, and Sarah, Joshua, Josiah and Nathaniel Zoelle, Aurora, Daigan, Xavian and Zendaiah Deeds, Brody Hanson, Preslie Deeds, and Jenna Mae Deeds; her mother, Maude Schemmel of Correctionville; sisters, Marcia Schemmel (Robert Kincaid) of Correctionville, and Ruth (Melvin) VanSteenwyk of Aberdeen, S.D.; and brothers, the Rev. Franz Schemmel (Ann Hafften) of Weatherford, Texas, and Daniel (Shari) Schemmel of Mankato, Minn. Sally’s extended family survives her, sisters-in-law, Janice (Roy) Hunwardsen of Correctionville, Lana (Larry) Whitesell of Houston, Texas, and Cecelia (Jerry) Bumstead of Mapleton, Iowa; and brothers-in-law, Jerry (Laura) Dixon, Daniel (Patricia) Deeds, and Milo (Reta) Deeds, all of Correctionville, Richard Albers of Battle Creek, Iowa, and Rick (Carol) Deeds of Kingsley, Iowa. The names of family and friends whom Sally considered sisters and brothers are as innumerable as the stars.

She is preceded in death by her father, the Rev. Ervin Schemmel; and nephew, Phillip Sallis
