The Rev. Edward J. Young 84, of Sioux City died Friday, March 8, 2002 at a Sioux City nursing home.

Services will he 2 p.m. Monday at Cathedral of the Epiphany Catholic Church with the Most Rev. Daniel Di Nardo, Bishop of Sioux City, officiating. Other priests of the diocese will co-celebrate the mass. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 3 to 8 p.m. today, with a vigil service at 7 p.m., at Larkin Northside Funeral Home. Visitation will resume one hour prior to the service Tuesday at the church.

The Rev. Young was horn Aug. 25, 1917 in rural Woodbury County. The the son of Joseph L. and Hazel (Semple) Young. He attended school in Bronson, Iowa, prior to moving to Sioux City in 1926. He attended Sioux City's Cooper School and Graduated from East High School in 1934. He then attended Morningside College from 1934 to 1938.

In 1939 he entered the Presbyterian Seminary in Omaha. He served in several Presbyterian churches in Kansas until 1946 when he joined the Catholic Church. He entered Conception Seminary in Conception, Mo. Prior to entering Conception Seminary, he taught school in Kansas. He completed his studies in 1953 and was ordained in the Cathedral of Sacred Heart on May 16, 1953 by the Most Rev. John B. Franz, D.D. Bishop of Dodge City. Kan.

While in the Dodge City Diocese he served in churches at Pratt, Hoisinton, Hugoton and Salami, Kan. He also taught at the Dominican School of Nursing and Dominica High School in Great Bend, Kan. In 1970 he returned to Sioux City and was accepted into the Sioux City Diocese. He taught at Heelan High School from 1970 to 1981. He was also on the faculty of St. Edmond High School in Fort Dodge, Iowa. He served parishes in Fort Dodge, Pomeroy and Palmer, Iowa. He retired in 1989 and returned to Sioux City.

He was an avid reader and a Civil War buff. He enjoyed tutoring students in history after his retirement.

He is survived by his cousins, George and Julie Semple, Richard and Doris Semple and Colleen and Lyle Baker, all of Sioux City; and several other cousins.
