OR Tech at Ida Grove Hospital remembered

Joan Elizabeth (Uhl) Glassel, age 70, of Danbury, Iowa died Sunday, November 24, 2002, at her daughter's home in Ida Grove, Iowa, following a lengthy illness.

Funeral services were held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 27, 2002, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Danbury, Iowa, under the direction of Christensen-Huffman Funeral Home in Ida Grove. The Reverend William Schreiber and Monsignor Mark Duchaine officiated the service, with burial following in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Danbury. Visitation was at the Christensen-Huffman Funeral Home in Ida Grove on Tuesday from 3:30-8 p.m. The Reverend Jim Tigges officiated a vigil prayer service at 7 p.m.

Joan Glassel was born September 26, 1932, in Mapleton, Iowa, the daughter of Clifford and Mercedes (Reinbold) Uhl. She attended public and parochial schools in Mapleton, and later attended and graduated from OR. Tech school at St. Joseph's Hospital in Sioux City.

On June 16, 1955 Joan married Doug Glassel in Sioux City, Iowa. They were married twenty years and then divorced. Their relationship was rekindled and a special friendship was enjoyed in the later years.

Joan worked as an OR Tech at St. Joseph's and at Horn Memorial Hospital in Ida Grove. She loved surgery and was well respected by her colleagues. She retired from Horn Memorial Hospital in 1986.

She was a member of St. Mary's Rosary Society, Danbury Euchre Club, and subbed for many card clubs. She was an avid Hawkeye fan! Joan enjoyed all sports, politics, and spending time with her grandchildren. Family and friends were an important mainstay in her life, and she was appreciated for her dry wit and wonderful sense of humor.

Survivors include five daughters, Linda Glassel of Coralville, Chris Schable and husband Don of Hubbard, IA, Peggy Rykhus and husband Jimmy of Boulder City, NV, Diane Jenkins and husband Dale of Ida Grove and Janet Schmidt and husband David of Holstein; eleven grandchildren, Amanda Beery and husband Todd of Ft. Riley, KS, Corey Hansen, of Independence, MO, Allie Jo Schable of Cedar Falls, Erica Glassel of Boulder City, NV, Malana Hansen of Ida Grove, Katie Glassel of Coralville, Zachary Regennitter of Holstein, Joshua Schable of Hubbard, and Deric Regennitter, Kiley Regennitter, and Dustin Schmidt, all of Holstein; a great-granddaughter, Allie Marie Beery of Ft. Riley, KS; a brother and his wife, Alan and Lisa Uhl of Douglastown, NY; four sisters, Elaine Collins and Lavonne Friedrichsen and husband Ray, all of Mapleton, Colleen Tjaden and husband Jack of Iowa Falls, and Sherry Juelfs and husband Dick of Cushing; two sisters-in-law, Mary Uhl of Oto, and Judy Uhl of Glendora, CA; as well as many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by special friend Douglas Glassel; a son, John Glassel; a granddaughter, Rhianna Glassel; a great-granddaughter, Mariah Glassel; her parents; three brothers. Robert, Kenneth, and Clifford Uhl, Jr.; and a brother-in-law, Eugene Collins.
