SIOUX CITY -- Esther Viola DeHaan, 89, of West Des Moines, formerly of Sioux City, died Friday, Dec. 11, 2009, at her residence.

Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Lutheran Church of Hope in West Des Moines. Additional services will be this coming spring at Morningside Lutheran Church in Sioux City. Burial will be in Graceland Park Cemetery. Local arrangements are under the direction of Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home in Sioux City. Esther was born June 19, 1920, in Sioux City, the daughter of Thorval and Mattie (Grute) Rudd. She grew up in Sioux City and graduated from East High School.

She was married to Jacob DeHaan on Dec. 8, 1940, Jacob died in December 1971. She worked for Purina, Nutra-Flo and for Lutheran Social Services in Sioux City. In 2002, she moved to West Des Moines to be closer to her children.

She was a lifetime member of Morningside Lutheran Church in Sioux City and was active in many church organizations. She was a devout Christian and was loved by all who knew her. She was very proud of her Norwegian heritage and a member of the Scandinavian Society.

Esther is survived by her children, Deanna McIntyre, Doug (Virginia) DeHaan and Mark (May) DeHaan, all of West Des Moines; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a sister, Lillian Jensen of Colorado Springs, Colo.

She was preceded in death by her mother and father; and a brother, Arnold.
