CORRECTIONVILLE, Iowa | Lt. Col. Evelyn Guthridge (USA Ret.), 77, formerly of Correctionville, died on June 5, 2013, in San Antonio, Texas.

Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Friday in Good Hope Cemetery, Correctionville, with the Rev. Leroy Riemer officiating. Military rites will be conducted. Arrangements are under the direction of Warner Funeral Home in Sutherland, Iowa. Condolences may be sent online to www.warnerfuneralhome.com.

Evelyn was born on March 10, 1936, in Correctionville. She graduated from St. Joseph Mercy School of Nursing in Sioux City.

She began her 23-year military career at the aeromedical staging facility at Brooks Air Force Base, Texas. She earned her flight nurse wings at the School of Aerospace Medicine and went on to serve as a flight nurse at Travis Air Force Base in California. During the Vietnam War, she was assigned to the 57th Aeromedical Squadron at Clark Air Force Base in the Philippines. She assisted in the evacuation of casualties from Vietnam to U.S. military hospitals on the East Coast. In 1973, she transferred to the U.S. Army and served in nursing administrative positions at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio and at the United States Army Hospital in Augsburg, Germany, as chief of the Department of Nursing. She retired at Fort Sam Houston, Texas on April 8, 1982.

Her decorations included the Air Medal with First Oak Leaf Cluster, Meritorious Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Air Force Longevity Award with Second Oak Leaf Cluster, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with First Oak Leaf Cluster, Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, and Expert Badge (small arms). She earned a bachelor of science in nursing at Incarnate Word University in San Antonio. After her retirement, she attended Parsons School of Design in New York City and earned a bachelor of fine arts degree from The School of the Art Institute in Chicago.

Survivors include her sister, Irene Bibler; her brothers, Marvin, Russell, Troy and Vernon; several nieces, nephews, and cousins; and dear friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Edna Guthridge; and two brothers, Lewis and Roland.
