DANBURY, Iowa -- Fred A. Paulsrud, 85, of Danbury died Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2009, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Faith Community Church in Ida Grove, Iowa, with the Rev. Paul Smalley officiating. Burial will be in Ida Grove Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the American Legion McNamara-Moore Post 61. Visitation with the family will be 5 to 7 p.m. today at the church. Born Jan. 21, 1924, in Los Angeles, Calif., Fred Arthur Paulsrud was the son of Arthur "Ole" and Mary (Nimocks) Paulsrud.

He married his best friend and sweetheart, Elfriede Hammer, on Sept. 30, 1947, in New York City. Fred and Elfriede moved many times from California, Oregon, South Dakota and Nebraska, settling in Iowa in 1954. Fred served in the United States Army during the World War II occupations in Nuremberg, Germany. He was a guard during the Nuremberg trials and met Elfriede while managing the Caramella Officers Club.

Throughout his life, Fred was involved in the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, Order of Eastern Star, Ida County Farm Bureau, Ida County Cattleman's Association, Ida County 4-H, and Faith Community Church. He farmed and was a steward of God's earth. He enjoyed his livestock and grain crops. Most of all, Fred loved and cherished his wife and kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids. He loved coffee at 4 p.m. and going out for afternoon drives.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Elfriede; three children, Ted and DeeAnn Paulsrud and Robert and Teresa Paulsrud, all of Danbury, Iowa, and Margaret (Mag) and Mickey Sauser of Anthon, Iowa; a daughter-in-law, Pam Paulsrud of Wilmette, Ill.; grandchildren, Matt Paulsrud and special friend, Shelie Anderson, Jill and Stuart Else, Brenda Schroeder, Todd Paulsrud, Ryan Paulsrud, Cori and Sean O'Connell, Lindsey Paulsrud and Pete Pennecke, Eli Paulsrud, Molly Paulsrud, Jessi and Nate Oldham, Josiah Paulsrud, Jordan Paulsrud, Justin Sauser, Brett Sauser, and McKenzie Sauser; great-grandchildren, Blythe, Matthew, Patrick, Emma, Evan, Lance, Lucas, Abigail, Levi, Alex, Anna, Jaxon, Taylor, and Tatum; a sister-in-law and husband, Paula and Hans Schwaiger of Marktschellenberg, Germany; and cousins, Jim and Heidi Coulson and Betty Balderson, all of California.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Paulsrud; a son, Art Paulsrud; his parents; and an infant sister.

The family requests in lieu of flowers memorials go to the family of Fred Paulsrud to be decided later for use at Crawford Creek Park.
