SIOUX CITY -- Tommy O. Rice, 63, of Sioux City, formerly of rural Akron, Iowa, passed away unexpectedly Friday, Nov. 6, 2009, near Denison, Iowa.

Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Union Creek Lutheran Church, rural Akron, with the Rev. Carla Nelson officiating. Military rites will be conducted by the Hoschler American Legion Post 186 of Akron. A time of visitation and fellowship will follow the service in the church basement. The Carlsen Funeral Home - Schroeder Chapel in Akron is in charge of arrangements. Expressions of sympathy can be extended to the family through carlsenfuneralhome.com.

Tommy O. Rice was born Oct. 9, 1946, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the son of Jay and Esther (Wolf) Rice. He was raised near La Porte City, Iowa. On Oct. 14, 1963, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He served his country during the Vietnam Conflict. He was honorably discharged on Nov. 24, 1969. He returned to the La Porte City area.

He was united in marriage to Diane Mether on Oct. 3, 1975. Tommy was an owner/operator of his own trucking business. He has been in the transportation business for more than 35 years. In 1981, he and Diane moved to Sioux City. In 1984, they moved near Akron in South Dakota and later east of Akron. In 2006, they moved back to Sioux City.

Tommy was a member of Union Creek Lutheran Church. He enjoyed fishing and restoring antique cars. He loved the times spent with his family, especially being a "Papa" to his grandchildren. Tommy will be greatly missed by his family and kept in their hearts forever.

Survivors include his wife of more than 34 years, Diane of Sioux City; two daughters, Amy Stenvold and her husband, Jeremy of Minot, N.D., and Leanne Slaymaker and her husband, Dan of Marengo, Iowa; two sons, Tommy T. Rice and his wife, Julie of rural Hinton, Iowa, and Travic Rice of Sioux City; eight grandchildren; and two brothers, John Rice and Cleo Rice of Waterloo, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Nonny McKinley.
