CUSHING, Iowa -- M. Louise Droegmiller 83, of Strawberry Point, Iowa, formerly of Cushing, passed away Sunday, Nov. 1, 2009, at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, following a sudden illness.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church in Cushing, with the Rev. Sheryl K. Ashley officiating. Burial will be in the Cushing Cemetery. Visitation will be 1 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee, Iowa. Macel Louise Mundy was born on March 6, 1926, in Willow Township, near Washta, Iowa. Her parents were William and Alice (Ege) Mundy. Louise grew up on the farm and in the town of Washta. She attended school in Washta. She graduated from high school there in 1943.

Louise and Arthur Droegmiller were united in marriage on Aug. 12, 1944. in Reseda, Calif. Louise was working in a factory in California, and Arthur was in the U.S. Army, serving in that area.

Louise and Art moved back to Iowa and began farming. They lived in the area between Correctionville, Iowa, and Cushing on several farms. In 1970, Art and Louise moved into Cushing. Louise worked for more than 40 years at the Holstein Good Samaritan Center as a nurse aide and activity coordinator.

Louise was a 4-H Leader for many years. She loved to garden and always had lots of vegetables and pretty flowers around her home and in the garden. Louise did lots of canning and baking, she made lots of cookies, her children and grandchildren always looked forward to her bringing them to special occasions. She also was a wonderful seamstress, sewing lots of quilts (she made a quilt for every child, grandchild and great-grandchild), and many garments. Louise was a member of a writers group.

Louise was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church. She participated in many activities, including being the United Methodist Women president for many years. She was also a very active member of the Legion Auxiliary in Cushing.

In 2008, Louise sold her home in Cushing and moved to Strawberry Point, Iowa. She enjoyed her cozy apartment and the new friends that she made there. She attended the Strawberry Point United Methodist Church. Louise still sewed quite a bit, put together jigsaw puzzles at the library and read many books. She also belonged to a writers group at the library.

Louise is survived by her children, Stephen Droegmiller and his wife, Jill of Cushing and Carol Raithel and her husband Tom, of Strawberry Point, Iowa; sisters-in-law, Irene Droegmiller of Sioux City, Ella Droegmiller of Cushing and Anne Droegmiller of Washta, Iowa; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Louise was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Arthur; her daughter, Bonni McLarty; and her three brothers, William, George and Richard.

Memorials may be given to the First United Methodist Church, Cushing, Iowa, Cushing Public Library, the Good Samaritan Home in Holstein, Iowa, or the Strawberry Point Public Library, in Strawberry Point, Iowa.
