SIOUX CITY -- Fred Lammers, 80, of Akron, Iowa, formerly of Sioux City, passed away Saturday, June 5, 2010, at his home.

Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Sioux City. The Rev. Michael Erpelding will celebrate. Entombment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the American Legion Hoschler Post 186 of Akron. Visitation will be after 4 p.m. today, with the family present after 6 p.m., and a Scriptural wake service at 7 p.m., all at Carlsen Funeral Home -- Schroeder Chapel in Akron. Visitation will resume 10 a.m. until service time Wednesday at the church. Expressions of sympathy can be extended to the family through carlsenfuneralhome.com.

Frederick Lammers was born March 18, 1930, in Platte, S.D., the son of Jacob and Jontina (Hoekman) Lammers. He attended school in Platte.

He enlisted in the U.S. Army in September 1948. He served his country as a medic in a M.A.S.H. unit during the Korean War. He was awarded the Marksmanship Medal for his service. He was honorably discharged in September 1951. Following his service, he returned to Platte, but was unable to find work. He moved to Sioux City and started working at the A & P Grocery. While working there, he met his future wife Maxine.

He was united in marriage to F. Maxine Hamlow on July 18, 1953, at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Sioux City. While making their home in Sioux City, Fred was a semi driver for Fremont Smith Trucklines, Siouxland Wholesale Grocery, and Metz Baking. He retired in 1991. In 2005, they moved to Akron.

Fred was a longtime member of St. Boniface Catholic Church in Sioux City. He was also a member of the American Legion Hoschler Post 186 in Akron and the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Sioux City. Fred enjoyed going hunting, fishing, and camping. He also enjoyed bowling and watching Iowa Hawkeye football. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Survivors include his wife of more than 56 years, Maxine of Akron; two sons, Michael Lammers of Le Mars, Iowa, and Marvin Lammers and his wife, Ruth of Sioux City; two daughters, Teresa Lammers and her husband, Dan Rodriguez of Sioux City, and Linda Montag and her husband, Dan of Sioux City; 10 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two brothers, Marion Lammers of Denver, Colo., and Jacob Lammers Jr. and his wife, Mona of Kansas; one sister, Ann Bok and her husband, Ko of Meadowlands, Minn.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Rita Mae Lammers; and a sister-in-law, Dorothy Lammers.
