LAWTON, Iowa -- Frances Schwegler Sturtevant, 95, of Sioux City, formerly of Lawton, died Friday, Jan. 2, 2004, at Sunrise Retirement Community in Sioux City.

Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Community Presbyterian Church in Lawton, with the Rev. Wayne Peach officiating. Burial will be in Banner Township Cemetery, Lawton. Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. today at Christy-Smith Morningside Chapel in Sioux City.

Frances Schwegler Sturtevant was born in Meadville, Penn., to Charles and Grace (Nichols) Elsesser on April 20, 1908. Her mother passed away in 1914, so she came to live with Ed and Belle Armitage. She grew up in the Lawton community and worked as a telephone operator while she was in high school. Frances graduated from Lawton High School in 1927.

She married George Hoffman after graduation and moved to a farm east of Hinton. Frances later married Ed Schwegler and moved to a farm east of James, Iowa. They lived there for several years until they bought a farm west of Kingsley, Iowa. In 1962 they sold the farm and moved to Lawton. Frances continued her active life serving on the school board, participating in church activities, teaching Sunday school, taking classes and traveling. The couple wintered in South Texas and looked forward to being reunited with friends from all over the United States as well as spending the winters with friends from Lawton who also wintered there.

Frances worked at St. Luke's Hospital in Sioux City until she retired in 1980 at the age of 72. Ed passed away in 1974. In 1981 she married Lewis Sturtevant. Lewis passed away in 1987. She continued to live on the edge of Lawton until 1992, when she moved to Sioux City.

Survivors include four sons, R. Neal Hoffman and his wife, Shella of Livermore, Calif., Gaylon Hoffman and his wife, Veva of Viborg, S.D., Jerry Hoffman and his wife, Nadine of Omaha, Neb., and Edward Schwegler and his wife, Sue of Plainfield, Ill.; two daughters, Patricia Gutierrez and her husband, Bert of Albuquerque, N.M., and Ruth Rolfs and her husband, Tom of Chanhassen, Minn.; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters.
