26 February 2007LAWTON, Iowa -- Harold D. Horsley, 85, of Lawton died Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2007, at Sunrise Retirement Community in Sioux City.
Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Community Presbyterian Church in Lawton, with the Rev. Peggy Hegeman officiating. Burial will be in Banner Township Cemetery, rural Lawton. Visitation will be 9 to 10 a.m. Tuesday prior to the service. Arrangements are under the direction of Rush Family Care Service in Onawa, Iowa.
Harold was born Sept. 18, 1921, in Sioux City, the son of Victor, Sr. and Zada (Zenor) Horsley. He was raised in the Lawton community and started farming there as a young man.
He married Mary Ellen Mead of Ravinia, S.D. on Jan. 24, 1942. They farmed and raised their three sons, who have continued to live in the community. Mary died Sept. 11, 2004.
Harold was very active in following his three sons in baseball, basketball and football. He also enjoyed fishing, hunting and camping with his family and friends. His favorite lakes in Minnesota were Manypoint and Kabatogama. He also fished many years on the Missouri River dam system of reservoirs. In 1976, he ventured to Lake Michigan and began an annual salmon and trout fishing trip. In his later years, he started turkey hunting, which may have been his favorite activity.
Survivors include his sons and their wives, Terry and Marilyn, Roger and Sue and Randy and Sheryl, all of Lawton; seven grandchildren, Wendy (Matt) Pearson of Kansas City, Mo., Brent Horsley of Denver, Colo., Tami (Todd) Van Rooyan of Sioux City, Kevin and Heath Horsley, Robin (Lance) Walker, all of Lawton and Heidi Horsley and her fiance, Kris Ruhland of Marion, Iowa; 10 great-grandchildren, Alysa and Brady Van Rooyan, Toby, Kylie and Kendra Horsley, Jacob, Emily and Bennett Pearson, Samantha and Ansley Walker; a sister, Vera Horsley of Lawton; and a sister-in-law, Wanda Horsley of Hinton, Iowa.
In addition to his wife, Mary, he was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Victor Jr. "Bub" Horsley and Jay and his wife, Bobby Horsley.
