15 February 2008LAWTON, Iowa -- Harriet (Babcock) Coker, 85, of Lawton died Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2008, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Community Presbyterian Church in Lawton, with Chaplain Lorna Peters officiating. Burial will be in Banner Township Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Christy-Smith McCulloch Chapel in Moville, Iowa. Condolences may be sent online to www.christysmith.com.
Harriet was born Aug. 6, 1922, in Moville, Iowa, the daughter of Benjamin and Evalena (McCrory) Babcock. She was raised and attended school in Moville, graduating from Moville High School. She continued her education and received her teaching certificate from Westmar College in Le Mars, Iowa.
She married George Coker on Jan. 5, 1943, in Las Vegas, Nev. Together, they moved to Lawton in 1946. She worked as a bookkeeper for Mercy Medical Center - Sioux City, retiring in 1983. George died Oct. 22, 1998. She remained in Lawton.
She loved spending time with her family. She was a member of Community Presbyterian Church, its Women's Club, the Friday Afternoon Club and the Up To Date Club. She enjoyed quilting, embroidery and reading.
Survivors include two sons and their wives, Richard and Lisa Coker of Woodward, Iowa, and Donn and Patti Coker of Colleyville, Texas; a daughter and her husband, LeeAnne and Gary Schmidt of Sloan, Iowa; seven grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; two sisters, Maryanna Harvey of Durango, Colo., and Wilma and her husband, Cecil Crabb of Kingsley, Iowa; a brother and his wife, George and Julie Babcock of Denver, Colo.; and a sister-in-law, Grace Babcock of Moville.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, George; a son, Thomas Coker; and three brothers, Wayne and Richard Babcock and infant William Babcock.
