LAWTON, Iowa -- Robert S. Andrus, 86, of Lawton died Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2007, at a Sioux City hospital.

Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Community Presbyterian Church in Lawton, with the Rev. Peggy Hegeman officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Christy-Smith Funeral Homes of Sioux City.

Robert "Bob" Andrus was born May 9, 1921, in Flint, Mich., the son of Frank and Althera (Sorder) Andrus. He was raised in Flint and graduated from high school there. Bob continued his education at Teachers County Normal School. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1943 and was a Bugle Master.

He married Betty L. Grigg on Oct. 6, 1945, in San Diego, Calif. He received an honorable discharge from the Navy in 1946. Together, he and Betty moved back to Flint, where Bob continued his education at General Motors Institute, graduating in 1949.

After working in many other states, the couple moved to Lawton in 1960. Bob worked for Iowa Mutual Insurance as an adjuster, and later as a manager. He retired in 1986 as vice president. Betty died on Dec. 19, 2005.

He was an active member of Community Presbyterian Church in Lawton and sang in the choir. He had been mayor of Lawton for eight years, a Mason with Trial Lodge 532 AF & FM and a 55-year member of American Legion Post 718. Bob enjoyed bowling, golfing and reading. He had played in several dance bands in the area.

Survivors include a sister-in-law, Lucille and her husband, Herbert Rhine of Lawton; three nieces, Joyce and her husband, Jack Shumansky of Burnsville, Minn., Carol Spencer of Fairbanks, Alaska, and Jeanniene Andrus of Illinois; three nephews, Daniel Rhine of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Gary Andrus of Galena, Ill., and David Andrus of Las Vegas, Nev.; and a grandniece, Jamie and her husband, Dave Moldlinski of Alaska.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; and two brothers, Gordon and Douglas Andrus.
