SLOAN, Iowa — Ira Clarence Copple, 92, of Sloan died Thursday, March 29, 2001, at Pleasant View Care Center in Whiting, Iowa.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at First Christian Church in Sloan with the Rev. Emery Killian officiating. Burial will be in Sloan Cemetery with a flag presentation by Smith-Rhodes American Legion Post 295 of Sloan with Mike Mareau commanding. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. today at Wood Funeral Home in Sloan.

Mr. Copple was born Oct. 31, 1908, in rural Salix, Iowa, the son of Ellis and Ada (Edwards) Copple. He married Leta Gulick on April 9, 1932, in Elk Point, S.D. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II from 1943 to 1945. He was a cook in San Diego and Seattle. He operated a restaurant and a locker in Sloan during the war. He retired from farming in 1971 and moved to Sloan. Mrs. Copple died Aug. 21, 1978, in Onawa, Iowa.

He was a member of First Christian Church in Sloan. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and trapping.

Survivors include four daughters, Sally and her husband Don Maddox of Gayville, S.D., Janet Van Auken of Salix, Sharon and her husband, Bill Johnson, and Twila Copple, all of Sloan; two sons and their wives, Ronnie and Bev Copple of Salix, and Gil and Vicky Copple of Sioux City; a daughter-in-law, Roberta Kelly of Whiting; 17 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; four sisters, Edith Adams, Ethel Johnson and Evelyn and her husband, Harold Dean, all of Sloan, and Eleanor Choquette of Salix; three sisters-in-law, Olive Copple of Whiting, Ladessa Copple of Fort Dodge, Iowa, and Opal Copple of Sloan.

He also was preceded in death by two sons, Jack and Benny; five brothers, Henry, Francis "Andy," Jesse, Lloyd and Ray; and two sisters, Ellen Helmes and Edna Bouvia.

Pallbearers will be Kip, Blaine, Bret and Dallas Maddox, Rod, Curtis and Cody Copple.
