SIOUX CITY | Patricia M. "Patty" Thompson, 48, of Sioux City, died Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2013, after a long courageous battle with cancer.

Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Michael Catholic Church in Sioux City, with the Rev. David Hemann as celebrant. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, with a rosary service at 4 p.m. and a vigil service at 7 p.m., all at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Condolences may be sent online to www.meyerbroschapels.com.

Patty was born on April 1, 1964, in Sioux City, to William H. and Marilyn P. (Alesch) Betz. She attended Catholic schools in Sioux City and graduated from Bishop Heelan High School in 1982.

On Oct. 1, 1983, she married Robert E. "Bob" Thompson in Sioux City. Together the couple raised two children, Nicole and Alex.

Patty mostly stayed home and raised her children until they went to school. She was very supportive and active in their lives and activities. In 1990, she began her career in interior design with a local design firm. She then started her own business, Thompson Interior Design in 1996. She loved all the people she worked for and with on each project. Patty’s career was one of her life’s passions and she was thrilled to share this with her daughter, Nicole, who joined the business in 2011. She continued working until the end.

Patty enjoyed weekends at the lake, traveling with her husband, gardening, cooking, and her puppies. She was fascinated by aspects of weather and always said, "I want to be a meteorologist when I grow up." Spending time with her family and friends gave her the most joy.

Patty lived and loved completely each day. Her spirit was radiant and vibrant; that is what touched and affected people the most. That same spirit will continue to be with those who loved her.

Patty’s faith was the strength and focus of her life. She was a godmother, confirmation sponsor and RCIA sponsor for countless people in her life. She was a longtime member of St. Michael Catholic Church.

Survivors include her husband, Bob; a daughter, Nicole Hospers and her husband, Dan of Sioux City, who are expecting Patty and Bob’s first grandchild; a son, Alex Thompson and Tess Kirkholm of Sioux City; five siblings, Barb Swanson and her husband, Mike of Sioux City, Kevin Betz and Gary Mulder of Denver, Colo., Mary Howard and her husband, Brad of McCook Lake, S.D., Bill Betz, and Tom Betz and his wife, Julie, all of Sioux City; two uncles, Bob Betz and his wife, Alicia of Denver, and Richard Betz of Sioux City; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Honorary pallbearers will be her nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made in her name to the Carmelite Nuns.
