SIOUX CITY -- Winnifred Augusta Bennett, 88, of Sioux City passed away Saturday, Dec. 24, 2011, at her residence.

Services will be 3 p.m. Thursday at Augustana Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Del Olivier officiating. Private graveside services will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be 1 p.m. until service time Thursday at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel. Winnie was born March 1, 1923, in Sioux City, the daughter of Grover W. and Hilma (Johnson) Rye. She grew up in Sioux City and graduated from Central High School. She received her B.A. and M.A. degrees from Morningside College.

Winnie married Norman A. Bennett on Sept. 29, 1941, in Sioux City. She helped build her own home and nine houses with Norman. She was a school teacher in the Sioux City Community School District at Franklin, Riverview and Joy Elementary Schools.

She was a talented seamstress and expert cook, who baked delicious pies. She enjoyed music and had a beautiful alto voice. Her playful and creative imagination made her a terrific teacher and she was a sympathetic listener.

Survivors include her children, Linnea J. Bennett of Cambridge, Mass., Norman A. Bennett and his wife, Diane of Murfreesboro, Tenn., Jo Bennett and Bob Burchfield of Iowa City, Iowa, and Archie Bennett of Sioux City; a son-in-law, Adam LeFevre of New Paltz, N.Y.; two sisters and their husbands, Joan and Joe Mitchell of Sergeant Bluff, and Marjorie and Lester Anderson of Omaha; four grandchildren, Michelle McGuire and her husband, Matt, Allan Bennett, Tate LeFevre and her husband, Chris Plehal, and Issac LeFevre; two great-grandchildren, Benjamin and Linnea McGuire; and many nieces and nephews.

Winnifred was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Cora Bennett LeFevre; her former husband, Norman A. Bennett; two brothers, Grover "Bud" and Edward; and four sisters, Gladys, Vivian, Phyllis and Shirley.

Memorials may be made in Winnifred's name to Hospice of Siouxland.
