SLOAN, Iowa -- Irene Longval, 92, Whiting, Iowa, formerly of Sloan, passed away Sunday, Dec. 18, 2011, at Pleasant View Care Center in Whiting.

Services will be 11 a.m. today at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Salix, Iowa, with the Rev. Patrick O'Kane officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Irene was born Nov. 14, 1919, in Correctionville, Iowa, the daughter of Raymond and Winnie (Spencer) Carrington. She graduated from Moville (Iowa) High School and attended Wayne (Neb.) College, where she earned a two year teaching certificate. She taught at Sloan Public School and St. Joseph Catholic School in Salix.

Irene and Harry Longval were united in marriage in 1942 in Vail, Iowa. They made their home in Sloan, where they raised their two children, Steve and Marsha. The couple enjoyed traveling extensively during their marriage. Harry passed away in September 1983.

She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Sloan Country Club, T.O.P.S and a bridge club. Irene was a fabulous cook and specialized in baking. She was always happy to have family in and treat them to her freshly made goodies.

Survivors include her son and his wife, Steve and Bev Longval of Sloan; a daughter, Marsha Ullrich of Kemah, Texas; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, Duane Carrington.
